Academy BFA Curriculum

The Academy Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art combines PAFA’s outstanding training and mentoring in studio fine art with a fine-arts oriented program in liberal arts. The Academy BFA offers a major in Fine Arts with concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Printmaking or Sculpture. It does not currently offer a minor.

In the first year BFA students take the same courses as those in the Certificate studio art program. The second and third years are devoted to coursework in liberal arts studies and in one of the four concentrations in studio art. During their fourth year, BFA students are assigned individual studio workspaces and are mentored by faculty critics in the Critics Program. Fourth-year BFA students develop a Graduation Portfolio, which documents their artwork and includes an artist’s statement. The program culminates at the end of the fourth year with participation in the Annual Student Exhibition.

The program requires the completion of 126-credits, 84 of which are devoted to studio art studies and 42 of which are liberal arts and general education studies. The liberal arts studies may be completed at the Academy or through approved transfer credits. The distribution requirements specify that 15 credits must be devoted to courses in Art History and Criticism Studies; 12 credits must be devoted to courses in Language and literature Studies; 9 credits must be devoted to courses in History and Culture Studies; and 6 credits must be devoted to courses in Science and Quantitative Thinking.
