Stephen Layne and Carrie Mae Smith

On view in the Alumni Sales Gallery are be works by sculptor Stephen Layne (’94) and painter Carrie Mae Smith (‘05).

Layne is the recipient of Pennsylvania’s Governor’s Award and currently teaches drawing and anatomy at the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. He has exhibited work with the National Sculpture Society in New York and in a variety of galleries throughout Philadelphia including Wexler Gallery, Artist’s House, and Gallery Joe. Layne utilizes a variety of materials to create his elegant and simplistic depictions of the human form.

Smith has exhibited nationally and is also the recipient of The Pennsylvania Governors Award, as well as several other awards and endowments. Before attending PAFA, Smith took a unique and unconventional path of travels. She found herself working in a farm exchange program abroad learning a variety of culinary traditions and eventually working as a private chef. Today, her work continues to celebrate her culinary interests. Smith renders ceramic dishes and silverware in delicate and exquisite manner.

About the Gallery

The PAFA Alumni Sales Gallery provides opportunities for PAFA’s talented alumni to exhibit and sell their art. The Alumni Sales Gallery adds to the professional development of our graduates and enables PAFA to maintain a lasting relationship with alumni throughout their creative lives. The PAFA Alumni Sales Gallery is a consignment gallery and is open to the public free of charge.

The 700-square-foot gallery is located in PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building, designed by the illustrious Philadelphia firm of Frank Furness and George Hewitt. Similar in look and feel to the other galleries in the building, the exhibition space allows for rotating group shows of alumni art. In addition, there is an extensive Web presence for the alumni.

A changing selection of art is juried by independent jurors and the Alumni Sales Gallery Manager, and features paintings, prints, sculpture, works on paper, high-quality crafts and other art by alumni. Work is on display to museum-goers as well as the general public. The gallery is open during all museum operating hours and hosts openings and events to provide additional exposure.
