The Coordinated BFA with the University of Pennsylvania

Academy studio art training and Ivy League academics

Since 1929, the Pennsylvania Academy has had a coordinated BFA program with the University of Pennsylvania. It is the joining of the two most prestigious institutions in Philadelphia, not to mention the nation.

Again, as with many of the opportunities here at the Academy, there are choices. Typically, after one year of coursework at the Academy, current Certificate students are welcome to apply to the Coordinated BFA program with Penn. Students, if accepted, can begin taking classes the summer after their first year, or on a part time basis for the next several years. In the end, to receive the Penn BFA, Academy students must complete 90 credits here at the Academy and 16 classes at the University of Pennsylvania. Many students chose to complete the entire 4 years of the Academy Certificate and then complete the Penn BFA. There are several other options available depending on your individual situation, so you should feel free to contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@pafa.edu if you have specific questions.

At Penn, Academy students are required to take 4 courses in art history. The remaining 12 classes are selected based on the student’s area of interest and are selected in conjunction with academic advisors here at the Academy and at the College of General Studies at Penn. In both cases, you are a member of a small group of students that receive specialized and individualized attention.

All Penn courses are offered on their campus, in the University City district of Philadelphia—a short subway ride from the Academy buildings. In their first year, many Academy students chose to live at the International House, Philadelphia (I-House) located adjacent to the campus at Penn. So, there is an amazing amount of interaction between the two campuses and students from both institutions. We are proud of this long, and storied connection between the two powerhouse institutions!
