Paul Hamanaka
Adjunct Faculty, Continuing Ed
Paul Hamanaka is a versatile artist. He utilizes all possible venues—drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, mixed media, assemblage and installation—to capture the invisible truth in life. His interest lies behind the scenes, often in the shadows, not on the surface. His art education in Japan flourished while he was furthering his studies in France. Works are selected in the Salon d’Automne and the National des Beaux-Arts exhibition in Paris. After moving to the US, he obtained MFA at PAFA.
His work and exhibitions have been reviewed in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Reading Eagle and the New York Times. His work has received numerous awards: second prize in the 2004 International Juried Show at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, top prize in the 69th Painting Awards at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts and the Kitanihon Newspaper Award in Japan, to name a few. His works can be found in collections in Japan, France, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland and the United States, including a work in World Bank in Washington, DC. He wrote a book, Zooby, to express his views about life through the eyes of a feline.
Hamanaka teaches Drawing and Painting in the PAFA Continuing Education program.
