This exciting collaboration between the PAFA and the Barnes Foundation unites PAFA’s studio instruction with an analysis of principles and techniques in masterworks in the Barnes Collection. Understanding the basic language of color and how that language is used by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Seurat and other masters whose work is represented in the Barnes collection is the objective of this course. Students will gain a greater appreciation for these masters as they learn how to recognize color's attributes of hue, value, temperature, and intensity and as they apply them to painting using precise, explanatory exercises. The use of graphite and tone to describe light will precede the use of color. Pigments, the selection of appropriate grounds and surfaces and the preparation of brushes and other tools will also be covered. Students will visit the Barnes on three occasions to examine how masters applied the painting principles studied in the studio at PAFA, and they will emerge with a body of personal work upon which they can base future study (No class on March 4).
